Hungarian soldiers killed in Afghanistan on May 17 declared heroes
2011-05-18 08:02
Hungary's defence minister declared the two Hungarian soldiers who died on Tuesday in an accident in Afghanistan heroes.

The soldiers, Andras Dalnoki and Orsolya Roth, lost their lives when a vehicle in a convoy of the Hungarian Provincial Reconstruction Team crashed and overturned.

Four other soldiers were injured in the crash which occurred in Baghlan province, northern Afghanistan, at 10.15am CET, the Hungarian Defence Ministry told MTI.

The driver and five other occupants were travelling in a M-RAP MaxxPro armoured vehicle from Mazari-Sharif to Puli Khumri, when an Afghan vehicle drove onto the road in front of them. Overtaking it, the driver of the third vehicle in the convoy of five suddenly steered to the left. The vehicle then spun at the curb and overturned.

One soldier died at the scene and another on the way to hospital.

The driver is in critical condition. Another one suffered serious injuries while two others were slightly hurt. The injured soldiers will be brought back to Hungary as soon as their condition permits.

Csaba Hende, the defence minister, expressed condolences to the soldiers' families.

All Hungary's parliamentary parties issued statements of sympathy.

Hungary's involvement in the NATO mission in Afghanistan has claimed six lives altogether since 2006.
