wentynine Palms Marine killed in Afghanistan, DOD says

A Marine stationed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms was killed Wednesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan the Department of Defense announced Thursday.
Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer, 23, of New Braunfels, Texas —who was killed while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom — was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms.
Spitzer, who served as a mortarman, enlisted in the Marine Corps on Aug. 17, 2009, according to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, headquarters of the 1st Marine Division.
This was Spitzer’s second deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
His personal and service awards include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal-International Security Assistance Force Afghanistan.

Marine from New Braunfels killed in Afghanistan

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (KXAN) — A 23-year-old Marine from New Braunfels died in combat Wednesday in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.
Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer was a mortarman with the 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California.
Spitzer enlisted in the Marine Corps in August 2009.

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. -- 23-year-old U.S. Marine Sgt. Thomas Z. Spitzer of New Braunfels was killed in combat in Afghanistan, the military said Thursday.
Sgt. Spitzer was a mortarman based out of Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms.
He was reportedly killed while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, June 25.
Sgt. Spitzer joined the Marines nearly 5 years ago; he was on his second deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, said the military.
Sgt. Spitzer was the recipient of many awards including, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan. |
