A Navy Reserve sailor assigned to a Quincy-based unit died Tuesday from a noncombat-related injury while deployed in the Horn of Africa to support the Afghan War, the Department of Defense confirmed.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew J. Clement, 38, identified as being from Massachusetts, died while he was deployed at Camp Lemonnier, the Department of Defense reported. The incident is under investigation.

The defense department said Clement was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the military’s designation for the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

Djibouti, a small nation on the Horn of Africa with a port at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, is a staging area for U.S. military operations throughout the Middle East.

Clement was a Navy reservist assigned to the Navy Reserve Unit Tactical Air Control Squadron 22, based at the Navy Operational Support Center in Quincy

An official at the Quincy reserve center declined to comment on Clement yesterday.
