A soldier from Bowie who was deployed as part of the battle against the self-declared Islamic State died in a non-combat incident in Kuwait on Thursday, the Department of Defense said.

Spc. Ronald L. Murray Jr. is the third person from Maryland to die during a military deployment this year. He was assigned to 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division based at Fort Bliss, Texas

Murray, 23, who worked in fire support, was killed in a vehicle accident, Fort Bliss spokesman Gil Telles said. He did not have further details of the accident.

"He was an outstanding soldier with an infectious smile, and sense of humor that would brighten any room," Col. Robert E. Lee Magee , commander of 3rd Brigade Combat Team, said in a statement. "He will be missed by his family, his fellow soldiers and his command."

Murray's death was "a tragic loss to the brigade, the nation and most importantly to his family," Magee said.

Murray entered the service in January 2015, and was assigned to the unit in June, Telles said.

Airman Nathaniel H. McDavitt, from Glen Burnie, was killed in Jordan in April when the building he was in collapsed under high winds.

Staff Sgt. Adam S. Thomas, from Takoma Park, was killed in a bomb blast in Afghanistan in October.
