Gov. Statement on the Death of Sgt. Arcala FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 14, 2005 No. 05-151 Governor’s Statement on the Death of Sgt. Arcala (Anchorage) – Governor Frank H. Murkowski released the following statement upon learning of the death of Army Sgt. Kurtis D.K. Arcala, 22, of Palmer. “Nancy and I were saddened to learn that another Alaskan has been killed in combat operations in Iraq. On behalf of all Alaskans, I extend our sympathies to the Berberich family for the loss of their son, Kurtis, while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was clear from the news reports that he was a dedicated soldier who believed strongly in the importance of his service to our country. I have directed my staff in Juneau to fly a state flag over the Capitol in his memory on Thursday and send it to his family with our heartfelt condolences. The Berberich family is in our thoughts and prayers and we hope they will be in yours.” Sergeant Arcala died from combat related wounds Sunday, September 11th. His HUMVEE was in a convoy when a roadside bomb exploded alongside the vehicle in Tikrit, Iraq.
