| KYLE JOSEPH COUTU Obituary COUTU, PFC KYLE JOSEPH USMC, 20, was killed February 18, 2010 during combat operations in Afghanistan. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was the beloved son of Melissa A. Coutu. Kyle was a 2009 graduate of William E. Tolman High School. Besides his mother he leaves his grandparents, Ronald and Janice (Driscoll) Coutu of NH and formerly of Pawtucket; aunts and uncles, Cheryl and John Durkin of Narragansett, Jennifer and Marty Durkin of South Kingstown and Greg and Mary Coutu of Cumberland; cousins, Cory and Maeve Durkin, Arianna, Lauren and Riley Coutu; his great-grandmother, Claire (Lallier) Coutu of Pawtucket; his fiance, Jacqueline DaSilva and several great-aunts and great-uncles. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. in St. Teresa Church, 358 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. Interment with Full Military Honors will follow at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. VISITATION will be held Thursday 3 to 8 p.m. at WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket. | Body of Marine returns to home state The Associated Press WARWICK, R.I. — The body of a Marine killed in Afghanistan has returned to Rhode Island. Pfc. Kyle J. Coutu’s body arrived Feb. 24 at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick. He was greeted by an honor guard of 20 military troops and police officers. Coutu, 20, was killed Feb. 18 supporting combat operations in Helmand province. His funeral is scheduled for Feb. 26 at St. Theresa’s Church in Pawtucket, and he will be buried at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. |

| Vigil for RI Marine The Associated Press PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A candlelight vigil will be held for a Rhode Island Marine killed Feb. 17 in Afghanistan. The vigil for Pfc. Kyle J. Coutu is scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at Pariseau Field, next to McCoy Stadium. Hundreds of people attended his funeral Feb. 26. It’s being organized by Coutu’s family, and friends and the staff of Tolman High School. Coutu graduated last year from Tolman, where he was a captain of the football team. Coutu, 20, was killed supporting combat operations in Helmand province. |

| Pawtucket high school to rename field after Marine The Associated Press PAWTUCKET, R.I. — The football field at Tolman High School in Pawtucket is being renamed in honor of a former player and Marine who died in Afghanistan. The Times of Pawtucket reports that the school committee unanimously voted earlier in March to name the field after Pfc. Kyle Coutu. The 20-year-old Coutu was a 2009 Tolman graduate and football captain who was killed on Feb. 18 during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was also captain of the wrestling team in high school. School administrators described him as a “good kid” and natural leader. |

| Alma mater dedicates field in Coutu’s memory The Associated Press PAWTUCKET, R.I. — A Pawtucket high school football field has been dedicated to a fallen Marine who played there. About 150 people gathered May 28 to dedicate the Tolman High School field to Pfc. Kyle Coutu, who was killed in Afghanistan in February. The 20-year-old Coutu was a 2009 Tolman graduate and football captain. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said the field was a place where Coutu developed leadership skills that made him a brave Marine. Coutu’s mother, Melissa Coutu, addressed her son and said he continued to amaze his family and make them proud. The City of Pawtucket declared the day as U.S. Marine Pfc. Kyle Coutu Day. |
