Huge Crowd Comes Out To Remember Fallen Kiski Soldier

UPDATED: 5:50 pm EDT August 12, 2008
APOLLO, Pa. -- A huge crowd gathered Tuesday to pay their last respects to a fallen soldier from Armstrong County.
Second Lt. Michael Girdano, 23, of Kiski Township, was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan on Aug. 1.
Hundreds of friends and family members attended a funeral Mass at St. James Catholic Church on Owens View Avenue.
Many of Girdano's former classmates from Apollo-Ridge High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point were there.
Neighbors and construction workers were seen bowing their heads, holding their hands over their hearts and waving American flags along the funeral route from the church to the Plum Creek Cemetery in Plum Borough.
Girdano is the seventh soldier from the Alle-Kiski Valley to die in Iraq or Afghanistan, and the third from his high school.
A memorial has been built near Route 56 in Allegheny Township to honor the seven who died.
