FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 10, 2005) — An Army special operations support Soldier based here was found dead Feb. 8 at his off-post home in Fayetteville, N.C.

Spc. George D. Katsigiannis, 21, a parachute rigger assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) here, and another person in the house had been shot to death, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Soldiers from his unit discovered the bodies at about 12:30 p.m. after Katsigiannis failed to report for duty for the second straight day. The Soldiers immediately called the police.

Local authorities have not yet determined exactly when the two were killed, but a Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said that a suspect wanted in connection with the murders was arrested today in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Katsigiannis, a native of Brooklyn, entered the Army in March 2003 and attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, S.C. After completing Advanced Individual Training as a parachute rigger at Fort Lee, Va., he was assigned to the 3rd SFG at Fort Bragg in October 2003.

Katsigiannis deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from June 2004 to November 2004. He was promoted to the rank of specialist on Dec. 1, 2004.

His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Parachute Rigger Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

Katsigiannis is survived by his wife, Angela, and his daughter, Ariana.
