1st Lt. Jared Landaker died Feb. 7, 2007, in Iraq. The Marine and Big Bear City resident was born May 3, 1981 in Madera, Calif., to Joe and Laura Landaker. The family moved to Big Bear when Jared was one month old. Jared lived his entire life in Big Bear, attending North Shore and Big Bear elementary schools, Big Bear Middle School and graduated from Big Bear High School in 1999. He played baseball and football at Big Bear High School and earned All-CIF honors. Jared earned his degree in physics at the University of LaVerne in 2003, playing baseball in college during his sophomore year. Between his junior and senior year in college, Jared decided to join the Marine Corps. His decision came after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He graduated from basic training in Quantico, Va., as a squad commander and attended flight school in Pensacola, Fla. He chose to fly CH-46 helicopters. He deployed to Iraq in August 2006 and flew rescue and medical missions.

Jared is survived by his parents, Joe and Laura Landaker of Big Bear City, his brother, Jason and sister-in-law Christina of Big Bear City; grandparents Myrle and Dorothy Clifton of Big Bear City; and nieces and nephews Ashley, Joseph, Sarah and Trevor Landaker of Big Bear City. Jared is also survived by his uncles Mark Clifton of Penn Valley, Calif., Randy Clifton of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Jerry Landaker of Phoenix, Ariz.; aunts Joanne Kelley of Monrovia, Calif., and Stephanie Fincham of Big Bear City; cousins Scott Clifton of Hollister, Calif., Steve Clifton of Santa Rosa, Calif., Jamie Payne of Glendora, Joel Kelley of Eagle Rock, Traci, Sean and Lisa Kelley of Monrovia, and Heather and Layne Clifton of Penn Valley, Calif.

A memorial service is tentatively planned for Saturday, Feb. 17, in Big Bear. Burial services will be at Riverside National Cemetery and are tentatively planned for Monday, Feb. 19.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Jared Landaker memorial fund at First Mountain Bank in the Interlaken Center. Donations will be forwarded to the Wounded Warriors, which supports wounded soldiers upon their return from Iraq.
