Freedom’s Cost

To All,
Like most of you, I've heard it said each Memorial Day, "Freedom is not free.". This year I truly understand this in a very personal way. I lost my son to the War on Terrorism, in Iraq - - of all days, on Memorial Day.

While my son is a Hero to me, I realize he is only one of the hundreds of thousands who have made the ultimate sacrifice over the past 225 years to insure our continued freedom, here in this country. It seems as though each generation must freshly water the ground of "freedom" with their blood, for our freedom here is only temporary. I know from the book of Revelations, that the current war is not the last war to be fought (change of Administration, change of Congress, not withstanding). How many more fathers will mourn the loss of a son for freedom's sake ? Too many, for sure.

I know of another Father that lost His Son over two thousand years ago, also in the mid-east, for our freedom's sake. His Son's blood bought us an eternal freedom - - freedom from the consequences of our sin. And while this freedom is free to us (we have only to receive it - a gift of grace - not one we've earned), it was not free to that Father. It was not free to that Son. It was blood given freely, out of love for us. My son's blood was given freely out of his love for this country. That Father raised His Son on the third day, and they are together in the heavenly places. This gives me comfort (a future and a hope) that I, too, will see my son again. I believe he knew the Lord, Jesus Christ. And I know the Lord knew him. I praise the Lord for the time He allowed me to have him here with me. I pray the Lord will comfort all the other fathers and mothers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters, friends and colleagues, for the losses they have experienced, or have yet to experience, the way He has comforted me.
