January 15, 2009 Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldiers Flags to be lowered Saturday, January 17, 2009 in honor of Marine Lance Corporal Robert Johnson and Oregon National Guard Sergeant Andrew Matthew Ralls (Salem) – Today Governor Ted Kulongoski ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff on Saturday, January 17, 2009 in memory of Marine Lance Corporal Robert Johnson of Central Point, OR and Oregon National Guard Sergeant Andrew Ralls of Salem, OR. During his second deployment to Iraq, Lance Corporal Johnson, 21, died Dec. 20th, 2008 from a non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq. Sergeant Ralls, 23, died January 9th, 2009 in Salem, OR. During a recent 2008 deployment to Iraq, SGT Ralls served as a Combat Medic. “Robert and Andrew were outstanding soldiers who served their state and their country with honor and courage,” said Governor Kulongoski. “They will be missed by friends and family and their service to our nation will never be forgotten.” |

Andrew Matthew Ralls May 1, 1986 - January 6, 2009 SALEM - Andy passed away on Friday, January 6. Andy is survived by his father, Carl Ralls; stepmother, Tomme Ralls; mother, Gretchen Baker; sister, Ashley Ralls; and stepbrothers, Andrew and Jason Gundlach. He found true love with Nicci Simon and was planning on getting married in May and is to have a baby in July. Also, survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents. Not to count the numerous friends and loved ones from T-Mobile. Andy was a Specialist in the Army National Guard and had just recently returned from a combat tour in Iraq as a Combat Medic and loved our great Nation. Andy had the type of personality that would light up a room when he walked in. He himself was raised in an Army household and grew up in various states around the United States. Finally settling with his family in Salem, Oregon. He graduated from South Salem High School in 2004. His quick wit, caring personality and infectious humor will be missed by so many. Andy was the type of person that would help out a total stranger and give you his last dollar if he thought you needed it more than him. Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 17 at Restlawn Funeral Home, 201 Oak Grove Rd. NW, Salem. Viewing times will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. Celebration of Life and Goodbye to Andy will be at the Hitching Post Saturday evening in Brooks. | ||||||||
