Chesterman was commanding a vehicle patrol when the lead vehicle struck a roadside bomb in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province, Afghanistan, on August 9, 2012. As he moved forward to take control of the situation, insurgents attacked the patrol with small-arms fire. Chesterman was shot and later died of his wounds at the hospital at Camp Bastion.
